PERSONA

A day in the life of John ‘Mille’ McAllister
John’s day starts at 5 a.m. He doesn’t read any newspapers because he doesn’t value current affairs. The only thing he does before he leaves is drink a cup of black coffee. A mini van picks him up at 5 :30 a.m., in front the local pub. The supervisor makes sure everybody is clocked in. His shift starts at exactly 6 a.m., when the supervisor blows his whistle. The only thing that keeps him motivated is the pay check he receives at the end of the month. At 10 a.m. there is a short break. In these short minutes, the men drink a cup of black coffee (that contains liquor to elevate their spirits).
Afterwards, they go back to work and discuss some car related matters, in John’s case they usually praise his Dodge or topics they heard on the (government controlled) radio that plays in the background. At 12 a.m., the lunch break starts in a typical canteen filled with old wooden chairs and tables. The options in the canteen are limited, most of the time there are only 2 possibilities. On the one hand there is the unhealthy pork meat with some beans and on the other hand an even more unhealthy option, the famous Big P. The hamburger is filled with onions, ketchup, mayonnaise, cheese, and beef. There is definitely no option regarding healthy or even vegan meals.
After the lunch break, they check in again and work until about 3 p.m.; this includes a new short break of approximately 5 minutes. They usually only have to drink 1 cup of coffee or smoke 1 cigarette before the last shift of the day starts. At 6 p.m. they are done for the day. Every blue collar worker is picked up by the mini van that picked them up in the morning and brings them back to the local pub.
This shows that labour is highly valued in Decimus, because a blue collar work usually works 60 hours a week. Even though they work and receive a large pay check, they remain humble to their leader.
When John comes home from the local pub at exactly 6.45 pm, his wife has already done the household chores and taken care of dinner. Dinner mostly consists of a kind of vegetable (carrots, broccoli or cauliflower), starch products (potatoes or chips/fries) and a large chunk of meat. They don’t take a lot of time and wolf down their dinner. This because John wants to sit in his chair at 7 p.m. to sip from his beer, brought by his wife, and rest for half an hour.
His evening is quite boring, he usually just sits in front of his telly and watches series like CSI Miami, Modern Family, The Simpsons and Match of the day, presented by Gary Lineker. His day ends at about 10.30 p.m., to repeat the routine regarding blue collar labour.
